This wonderful old map of Pre-Prohibition in the United States of America was originally published in 1915. It was created by an anonymous mapmaker.

This map shows the local laws that controlled alcohol production and consumption across the US before the nationwide prohibition from 1920 to 1933.

As you can see, by 1915, thanks to the early work of prohibitionists, alcohol was already prohibited in many rural states, with the notable exceptions of Minnesota, Nevada and Montana. Most metropolitan areas had alcohol licensing that controlled both the production and consumption of alcohol.

Eventually, of course, the prohibitionists won the battle and the Eighteenth Amendment of the US Constitution would ban alcohol production nationwide. They hoped that such drastic measures would reduce crime - but, as we know now, quite the opposite occurred.

This map looks great at all sizes: 12x18in (30.5x46cm), 16x20in (40.5x51cm), 18x24in (45.5x61cm), 24x36in (61x91.5cm), 30x45in (76x114.5cm), 33x50in (84x127cm), 40x60in (102x153cm) and 47x70in (120x178cm), but it looks even better when printed large.

I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 100in (254cm). Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.

The model in the listing images is holding the 24x36in (61x91.5cm) version of this map.

If you’re looking for something slightly different, another option would be this amazing map of Lynchings in the United States of America by Tuskegee Institute in 1931.

The locations on this map include: all 48 contiguous US states and a brief mention of US territories and dependencies.

This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, Father's Day, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone interested in Pre-Prohibition in the United States of America or the history of American constitutional law.

This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
